        During the budget session of 2012 & 2013 of the Legislative Assembly Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced under the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Rule 110 that new Government Polytechnic Colleges would be started in seven districts which includes Villupuram district at Sankarapuram. Accordingly, the institute was started during the academic year 2013-14 with the intake of 300 students in five branches namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science Engineering with 60 students in each department. It was initially functioning on the Government Boys Higher Secondary School Campus with 300 students. Later, it was shifted to the present own place which covers an area of 10.33 Acres and the Polytechnic is situated at 2 km from the Central Bus Stand, Sankarapuram, on the Poikunam Road and has bus facilities.
