Government Polytechnic College, Sankarapuram is one of the seven polytechnics founded in 2013 as announced by the CM of Tamil Nadu under the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Rule 110. It was initially functioning in the Government Boys Higher Secondary School Campus, Sankarapuram. Later, it was shifted to the present own place which is situated at 2 km from the Central Bus Stand, Sankarapuram, on the Poikunam Road.At present, the curriculum has blossomed into five diploma courses namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics& Communication Engineering and Computer Science Engineering with an intake of 60 students in each branch together with 20 per cent of students through lateral entry.
The candidates who complete the Xth Standard are eligible for admission in our Polytechnic Colleges as per the qualification prescribed by Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai.HSC / Xth standard with 2 years ITI students can directly join the second year of the three year Diploma programme under Lateral Entry System and their intake is restricted to 20% of the sanctioned intake of the First year Diploma courses. Before the admission process is started, the required qualifications such as Age, Marks required, and Number of Seats in the various categories etc. are published in the leading dailies so that students can decide their choice of course well in advance. The polytechnic seats are offered considering the merit and also community reservation system of State Government of Tamil Nadu. The selected students has to pay Rs.2000 annually as development fees and special fees.
A library with a reading room is available for the use of the staff and the students of the Polytechnic college.
A free boarding and lodging boys hostel operated in this polytechnic through the most backward class welfare department with 100 students capacity. A paid Hostel is operated in this campus for Boys. Presently, 80 students are staying in the Hostel.
Students are provided with the facility of Free Medical Consultation. Medical Check-up of the students is carried out by the part-time Doctor.
A good number of student volunteers are involving with a view to develop social activities in student life by way of rendering all sorts of service to the downtrodden people living in rural areas and slums. All the students of this institution are insisted to donate blood at regular intervals. Awareness programmes and rallies on various social issues are conducted for the welfare of the public.
The students of the polytechnic are eligible for concession on the Southern Railway from their residence to the polytechnic and vice versa. Student desirous of getting such concession shall apply in the prescribed form for getting the certificate atleast two days in advance.
